What is WoodWright?

WoodWright is free cabinet design software.

WoodWright is a free desktop program for custom cabinet shops. You design the cabinets in it, and the same job produces the cut list, the sheet nesting, the shop drawings and the CNC output.

It runs on Windows 10 and 11. There is no account to make and no subscription to buy.

What it does

Design, then everything after the design.

A cabinet job is drawn once and then re-typed four times — into a cut list, onto a sheet layout, into a quote, into whatever drives the machine. WoodWright is one file that produces all four, so a dimension is keyed once.

  • Design the room — plan, elevation and 3D are one model, with every cabinet parametric to 1/32 inch. Layout
  • Get the cut list — every part the design implies, sized, grouped by material and labeled. Nothing is typed in. Cut lists
  • Nest the sheets — true-shape, grain-locked and remnant-aware: 7 sheets, not 8, on the sample kitchen against rectangular nesting. Nesting
  • Print the drawings — drawing sets, quotes and BOMs off the same numbers as the parts. Drawings & 3D
  • Cut it — G-code straight from the nest for eight controllers, and a layered DXF for whatever CAM you already run. CNC output

The optional cloud AI sits on top of that: describe the job in plain English and the Draftsman lays the cabinets out on your walls, or render the exact 3D layout photorealistically for the client.

Who it is for

Custom cabinet shops.

Face-frame and frameless, from a one-person shop to a small crew. The app is built and proven daily in a working cabinet shop.

It assumes you already know how the boxes go together. It does not teach cabinet making; it does the paperwork that follows it.

What it is not

Six things WoodWright is not.

Said plainly, because guessing wrong about any of these wastes your afternoon.

What it costs

Nothing, and here is why.

The desktop CAD is $0. Install it on every bench in the shop and run paying work through it for as long as you like.

Design, nesting and CNC output run on your own computer, so they cost us nothing to give away.

The cloud AI is the exception. The Draftsman and the photorealistic renders run on cloud GPUs that bill per call, so they run on prepaid credits — bought when you want them, never a recurring charge. That is the only paid thing there will ever be, and it is what keeps the lights on.

When credits run out the AI pauses and the app carries on. There is a longer answer to why this is free, in the builder's own words, on the About page.

Questions

Straight answers

What is WoodWright?
WoodWright is free cabinet design and manufacturing software for custom cabinet shops. You design the cabinets, and the same job produces the cut list, the sheet nesting, the shop drawings and the CNC output. It is a desktop application for Windows 10 and 11, it costs nothing to download or run, and it needs no account.
What does WoodWright actually do?
It takes a cabinet job from the tape measure to the machine. Lay the room out in plan, elevation and 3D; every part the design implies is generated and sized; the parts are nested onto sheets; and the job goes out as labeled cut lists, quotes, drawing sets, G-code for eight controllers and a layered DXF for whatever CAM you already run.
Is WoodWright free?
Yes. The desktop application is free: no subscription, no one-time purchase, no seat count, no revenue cap and no trial clock. The only thing that ever costs money is the optional cloud AI, which runs on prepaid credits you buy when you want them.
How does WoodWright make money if the software is free?
The optional cloud AI, and nothing else. Design, nesting and CNC output run on your own computer, so they cost us nothing to give away; the Draftsman and the photorealistic renders run on cloud GPUs that bill per call, and prepaid credits cover that.
Who is WoodWright for?
Custom cabinet shops — face-frame and frameless, from a one-person shop to a small crew. It is built and proven daily in a working cabinet shop.
What is WoodWright not?
It is not a general 3D modeller, not a web app, and not a place your files live. It runs on Windows only — there is no macOS build yet, though one is on the bench — and no WoodWright CNC program has cut on a real machine yet: every direct program is simulated and read back before the app will offer it.
What do I need to run WoodWright?
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a WebGL2-capable GPU, 8 GB of RAM recommended, and under 1 GB of disk. You need no account and no internet connection to run it; an account only unlocks the optional cloud AI.
